The Den10: August 17th

Summer is over. School is back in session for the DentonISD kids, with parents cheering while teachers sigh, and our universities UNT and TWU are starting back soon as well. All this means our two-college town is back to full-speed and there will be events a’plenty to enjoy. Here’s our curated top #DEN10 events coming up this week for you to put in the planner.

THURSDAY AUGUST 17
Songwriters Song-Swap | Andy’s | 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Featuring in the round performances by Matthew Gray, Nicholas Altobelli, and Cameron Matthew Ray, this weekly meet is a good time.

August LGBT+ Social | Harvest House | 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Grab a cool drink at this hot venue to meet-n-mingle at this monthly mixer. Meet advocates and allies to hear about local causes.

Dr. Sketchy’s Denton | GDAC | 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM
For only $5 you can chill in the A/C sipping a cold one while drawing glamorous underground performers in a friendly BYOB environment. Ask QuickDraw Joe for tips on drawing dinosaurs.

FRIDAY AUGUST 18
Veterans Suicide Prevention Workshops | UNT Gateway Center | 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM
September is National Suicide Prevention Month, and Denton County MHMR with the Denton County Military Veterans Peer Network (MVPN)  are offering a free Suicide Awareness & Prevention event on the UNT Denton campus. Denton County MVPN is a local not-for-profit organization that works directly with veterans providing connections to community resources including access for free mental health screenings, peer groups, and a place to connect with other veterans. The event is free, but registration is required so veterans and their immediate family members will be provided with a free lunch. Proof of veteran status will be required. You should also check out the Veterans First Tiny Houses Fundraiser on Saturday.

¡Taco Revolución! | Bearded Monk | 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM
Liberty probably tastes a lot like Big Knife Tacos, but the Bens are also serving brews from Independence Brewery with a “2 tacos & a can” deal for $5. The revolution never tasted so delicious.

Raised Right Men | Harvest House | 9:00 PM - 11:59 PM
Go hear this toe-tappin honky tonk band on an outdoor stage under the Texas sky as God and Sam Houston intended. Free show!

SATURDAY AUGUST 19
Matt Young Music Showcase | The Ghost Note | 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM
Of course your Saturdays should always begin at the Denton Community Market, but when you head to the Square be sure to check out this amazing drum jam going down. You’ll need tickets, but there’s free beer for the +21 set.

John Wesley Coleman Show | Dan’s Silver Leaf | 9:00 PM - 12:00 AM
John Wesley Coleman III is coming home to Denton with his pysche-country-rock to play The Silver Leaf with Chris Welch and The Cicada Killers and Friday Mean, but come early to hear about Tiny Houses for Veterans.

SUNDAY AUGUST 20
GT-Moto Bike Unveiling | West Oak Coffee | 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM
This Sunday Bikes and Coffee event has Denton Moto Collective teaming up with Denton Independent Motorcycle Show to show off their newest build… a 2008 Ducati Sport Classic! After you’re done admiring the wheels, wander down to the Sunday Funday Market at Mulberry Street Cantina.

TUEDAY AUGUST 22
Denton Nerd Nite | Bearded Monk | 8:00 PM - 11:00 PM
The nerds return with another set of entertaining talks on cool stuff by smart people, so go enjoy the nerdiness while sampling a tasty selection of craft brewskis!

Denton has plenty of other indoor stops to keep you cool when you ain’t enjoying that new Water Works Park Wave Pool or chilling in City Pool. You also still have time to catch our WDDI top picks for “Denton Summertime Fun” or maybe these “Denton Podcasts” to pass time in your cubicle or that dang long drive down the apocalyptic heckscape that is I-35. As always, holla in the comments if you have a fave to add, but be sure to tag your pretty Instagram pics with #WDDI so maybe you make the cut on Monday’s glorious “What We Did” review!
